Freedom. Liberation. No more burdens. That's what we all want from this world. The only problem is that it can't happen while we're on earth. I've known people who chased freedom from their problems in relationships that have eventually let them down. I've had close family members who eased their pain with drugs. That always ended with tragic results. Others think more money is the answer to everything they lack. It isn't. Money has a tendency to fly away. From my point of view, the only way to truly be free is to be in Heaven.
This piece was created based on a headstone that a family made for their wheelchair-bound son. He lived 11 years. He was only expected to live 2-3 years. When the boy died, his father commissioned a sculpture to create a headstone of the boy being released from his earthly troubles and ascending into Heaven. I was inspired by that headstone to create this work. Little did I know that a friend had a cousin who's son was also wheelchair-bound and had recently died. The mother wanted to have the same headstone created for her son's grave, but it was too costly. My friend saw this painting, asked if she could buy it, and told me the story. My friend gave it to the mother who immediately burst into tears. I believe that both of these boys are rejoicing in Heaven forever.
