I wanted this to capture the last moments of Jesus, but something unexpected happened during the painting of this piece. The expression on His face looks like His final breath. It’s the moment when the Savior of the world gave His life for us. I had not planned to paint the golden halo, but as I was finishing this piece, I was struck by how much it reminded me of an ancient Catholic icon, so the halo was added. I painted this live and a man came up to me afterward and said he wanted to buy it. People have shared that it has an incredible impact on them.
