I'm always looking for inspiration that stir up my creative juices. I saw a video of a man painting an abstract image and using some unusual tools that I got curious about. Being a DIYer, I made a similar tool and used it on this painting, along with becoming more free with the way the paint flowed on the canvas. I didn't know it at the time, but I was moving away from my original style when I created this. Before this one, my style was very simple. My work was nice, but I see now that it was simply the foundation for me to be able to layer new techniques and methods upon.
I painted this live and was just having fun while I worked. I sold this the day I painted it. In fact, three people came up to me and said they wanted to buy it. It was strange to witness three people discuss why they wanted it...in front of each other! Ultimately the buyer had a greater sense of urgency than the others. I told the others that I would be happy to do my best to duplicate this one, which is difficult to do because duplicates never turn out exactly like the original.
The buyer shared that she liked that Jesus was smiling. She said it gave this painting a different feeling of Jesus' character than people are used to thinking of. Her son had just become a pastor of a church and she gave it to him. It hangs in his office now and I hope that when people meet with him that they sense that Jesus is smiling on them.
